Spinal Diagnostic Imaging: Online Course
This course will introduce rehabilitation professionals to the basics of medical diagnostic imaging of the spine and its articulations. Learners will learn the basic production, evaluation, and integration of medical imaging. The focus of the course is on the understanding the standard x-ray film series for the spine, with specific applications of bone scans and MRI. It employs a systematic, practical approach and integrates case study participation in the analysis of some films. Learning will be enhanced and supplemented with video lecture and readings of key literature in the world of imaging and rehabilitation. The CE hours from this course may be used towards the spinal diagnostic imaging requirement within the Washington State Spinal Manipulation Endorsement RCW 18.74.190 (1c) .
Course Objectives
Articulate the basic physics, uses, and capabilities of the different diagnostic imaging modalities including MRI, bone scans, ultrasound, computed tomography, and radiographs.
Implement evidence-based diagnostic imaging procedures as appropriate to help determine the patient who would benefit from physical therapy interventions and the patient who requires referral for further medical services.
Determine the most appropriate musculoskeletal imaging procedure according to the patient presentation and the use of current best evidence for diagnosis.
Distinguish between the appearance of normal anatomy and common pathology on musculoskeletal images to facilitate diagnostic accuracy and appropriate intervention strategies.
Display safe and effective education to patients and clients regarding their diagnostic imaging results.
Implement a systematic approach to the analysis of plain film radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography in order to determine the relevance of visualized pathology to clinical decision-making.
Display appropriate ordering of diagnostic imaging exams utilizing the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria (ACR AC).
Articulate an enhanced imaging terminology appropriately, expressively, and receptively amongst other medical professionals, and discuss the differences between various imaging modality terminologies.
